There was apparently a glitch in HMRC systems, and many taxpayers are receiving letters intimating the returns have not been filed.
If you do receive one, please let us know – we should be able to assure you that the returns have been filed, but the information has not been properly captured by HMRC in their systems, usually where some sort of manual intervention is required. It is just one more example of HMRC inefficiencies!
Be aware that personal tax liabilities are due for payment on 31 January, and this will be a balancing payment for 2021/22 tax and a payment on account for 2022/23. For the many companies that have a 31 March year end, any corporation tax is due for payment on 1 January. HMRC have raised the interest rates charged for late payment of tax so ensure you pay on time!
